For most of human history, the benefits of meditation were described in the language of spiritual experience. Over the past three decades, neuroscience has provided a different vocabulary — built on brain scans, cortisol measurements, and structural MRI.
The 8-week threshold
Dr. Sara Lazar's team at Harvard studied participants who had never meditated. After an 8-week programme — about 30 minutes per day — structural MRI scans showed measurable increases in prefrontal cortex thickness and measurable decreases in amygdala density. Eight weeks. Thirty minutes a day. Visible structural change in the brain.
The cortisol connection
Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone. Chronically elevated, it is associated with immune suppression, disrupted sleep, and cardiovascular problems. Regular meditation has been shown to reduce baseline cortisol levels by up to 43%. The mechanism is straightforward: meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system and reduces the chronic over-activation that characterises modern life.
The Default Mode Network
The brain's Default Mode Network is active when we are not focused — essentially when our minds are wandering. In most people, it is associated with rumination and self-referential thinking. Experienced meditators show markedly different DMN activity — not because the network goes offline, but because its activity is less self-referential and less associated with negative affect. The meditating brain wanders differently — and notices the wandering faster.
